WHAT THE CRITICS SAY

THE DALLAS SUN TIMES

Asherman

“A former member of Paul Taylor Dance Company, Mr. Evert moves like an Adonis, all organic flow. His wife, Susana, who once danced with the Ballet Independiente de Mexico, offers fire.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES

“There is a natural and serene feeling to the flow, and the pieces seem to build to some larger, organic flow… the duets… breathe quiet ecstasy and eroticism.”

PLAIN DEALER Sept 2005

DANCEVERT presented two solos expressing the artistic directors' obsession with spirituality. Susana Weingarten de Evert danced "Ofrenda" ("Offering" with a lizard-like icon that she alternately held at arm's length and brought to her lips. Moving gracefully to the haunting strains of Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata, she progressed from one circle of light to another and ultimately placed the symbolic object before an imaginary altar. Tom Evert performed "Petition" within the confines of a single lighted circle. With raised arms and secure balances, he offered a reverent movement prayer accompanied by John Jarvis' melodious music.

The Evert were born to dance together: long may they dance”

We always expect professionalism from the Everts, but we were surprised at how successfully they maintained our interest in the extended improvisation. The costume changes gave the piece some added variety and another layer of structure. The breaks didn’t seem to be about resting, for neither dancer seemed to tire over the length of the piece.”

Tribune, ( April 2004)

“There is a chemistry that surpasses the physical realm of dance, and the drama between both is a goose bumper. The content in the works of DANCEVERT is profound, and yet there is humor and invention…. their style is so unique! people cried, laugh and felt more than usual...their transparency is evident!”

“Amazingly Inventive” THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Tom and Susana Evert draw us into a world of intimacy and depth, where heart and soul are revealed in human terms, and where we can witness the nitty-gritty of the struggle to be vulnerable, in love and in one's spiritual life. Seen with their great skill, taste, and humor Mr. Evert is a rare breed - a true craftsman. It's no accident that he is a sculptor as well as a dancer. When he moves, he carefully shapes his body, and the surrounding space, to create images that are clear and evocative. Tom adds a self-effacing vulnerability seldom seen in male dancers, and which, in their many duets, is a useful foil for his partner Susana's .
Susana Evert dances boldly and brightly. She grabs your attention, and draws you in. She can morph from surrendered lover to angst-driven fury and back again in a split second . Her face is almost never neutral - it's as expressive as the rest of her, and sometimes audibly so. While capable of statuesque and fiery beauty, she's not afraid to get down and roll around on the floor, either - a sign of the vulnerability that makes her dancing so potent a communication. As a choreographer, her work communicates full range of her Latin heritage, from fleshy sensuality to spirit-filled concepts.

The Everts struck gold with their repertoire of dramatic, emotional and humanistic choreography, in TRUTH NAKED, a dramatic duet that took them from the heat if a Latin dance hall to the harmony of loving self-realization…….”

CoolCleveland, Thomas Mulready
( Oct 2004 )

Creativity

“Spirituality and Sexuality This program consisted of a rotating touring program including the recent premiere Satsang and signature work Truth Naked among other elusive, fantastic-realistic and mostly beautiful poetic and dramatic movement art-works.”

THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Windows

“Surprising supports and lifts, Languid poses and stunning sculptural shapes were on view…there was real originality here…the best moments were, frankly, in stillness.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

"The most sophisticated work of the evening was surely Tom and Susana Evert's ILLUSIONS, a piece about Love - the wonderful sense of irony and wry assessments of the two opposing personalities---achieved through minimal and imaginative ways-made this work a true delight”

THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER

Naked Truth

"The Everts, the Yin and Yang of choreography...their subject matter is adult, the performance compelling… ”Truth Naked", gut-wrenching spirituality, a rose of a piece...the Everts gave a transcendental performance and presented a thoughtful piece with maturity, depth and wisdom"

James Levin ( Co-Director Ingenuity Festival)

Influence

“Your performance with NASA remains one of the most talked about events of the Festival. Bravo! and heres to more soon!”

The Plain Dealer

Alma Duality

“The dancing was hot at the performance of “Alma de la Tierra” …The cast performed at a high level of professionalism and the crowd got caught in the smooth flow of music, dancing and visual imagery…an enriching aesthetic experience.”

THE NEW YORK TIMES…Jennifer Dunning

Naked Truth

“The Everts abandoned two tirelessly assertive, amusingly wordly selves to merge in a larger but still nicely erotic consciousness in the darker, more turbulent “TRUTH NAKED”,…….

During Offering

“…DANCEVERT, Tom and Susana Evert, were dancing and we always try to catch whatever they do. In this case they were working not with repertoire but with a form new to them, extended dance improvisation to live music…. they climaxed in a slow but spectacular partnering sequence in which Tom carried Susana on his shoulders and lowered her to the floor by bending forward from the hips with a straight spine, a risky show of strength. The intensity of that early climactic moment galvanized the attention of the audience and lifted this improvisation out of any association it might have had with the lazy or casual.

Confluence

INGENUITY Friday - “Confluence” DANCEVERT A review by Linda Eisenstein posted to The Cool Cleveland

INGENUITY Friday - “Confluence” DANCEVERT - DANCEVERT’s collaboration with NASA engineers “Confluence” -

“…a prophetic piece. As Susana Evert danced in a white dress, a watching 4-year-old girl in the audience stood on a tabletop, transfixed, trying to mirror her every movement. The piece ended under an arch of gorgeous sky/sea blue fabric, like a floating benediction. Magical.” - Linda Eisenstein

DANCE IN CLEVELAND ALIVE AND WELL; DANCEVERT; LES BALLET DE MONTREAL; DANCE REVIEW - Roy Berko March 6, 2005

DANCEVERT Since 1986, when Tom and Susana Evert founded their dance company, they have been enveloping their audiences with dance that fits their mission of "enlightening and energizing the human spirit through the creation and performance of original dance/theatre works." What the Everts do is not done by others. In their recent performance at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, they held the audience's attention with six varied pieces.

"Bliss/The Conversation," saw the beautiful Susana, dressed in a filmy, flowing gown, sprightfully move to pleasant music in a state of bliss….. The segment was athletic, powerful, dramatic and risque’

Ego Act

"Ego Act" a solo in its Cleveland premiere. choreographed and danced by Tom….. The entire exhausting work was done to shrill fingernails-on-the-blackboard music which increased the tension of the profound experience.”

Susana Shooting

"Once More...Not" found Susana on the floor clothed in combat boots, a flack helmet and fatigue pants… she took us through the throughs of death, the stripping off of her clothing of war, and dancing in an out of body experience with a strand of prayer beads. An intriguing work about life after dead?”

Susana Solo Alma

"True Water" ia sensual composition in which Susana writhes nearly naked on a mat in the enter of the dance space. Her beautiful body moved in time to the music creating a sexual energy …..Deep in context this is a spiritual ritual that reminds us that the body is our medium through life, and we are sexual-emotional beings”

Alma de la Tierra

"Olivido" (Oblivion) was a short duet creation which conveyed an interaction between two ordinary hispanic people. An excerpt from their award winner evening-length " Alma de la Tierra", a hot dance that epitomizes the flowing juices that the Everts convey on stage.”

Satang

"Satsang" a dance set to the music of Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar. A segment filled with harmony and joyfulness. It creatively developed the meaning of "Satsang," Sanskrit for, "true or right relationship to the Divine" and brought a very interesting evening of dance to a purposeful close.”
