“Dance is an important addition for the complete development of your child”

Perrysburg

Our children will have to excel to survive in the competitive economic environment. For this to occur, schools will have to develop the brain, and teach children to think, instead of the standard of memorizing facts for tests.

Howard Gardner's book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Basic Books, 1983) discusses intelligence as being based on seven primary forms of intelligence. The first two are ones that have been typically valued in schools (logical-mathematical and linguistic); the next three are usually associated with the arts (music, spatial, and body-kinesthetic) the final two are what Howard Gardner called 'personal intelligences' (intrapersonal{insight, metacognition}) and interpersonal {social skills}).

Perrysburg

It would seem that development all of these areas would result in the most well rounded and the brightest individuals. Unfortunately, these areas are not specifically targeted.

Parents that are concerned about their children future would be wise to enrich their children with activities that would help to develop the areas that are sometimes overlooked.

~~~One such Activity is Dance~~~
Dance Develops:
  • Musical intelligence According to Howard Gardner musical intelligence runs in an almost structural parallel to linguistic intelligence. Dancers show a heightened musical intelligence.
  • Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence: the ability to use one's body in a skilled way, for self-expression or toward a goal. Dancers are among those who display bodily-kinesthetic intelligence. Howard Gardner sees mental and physical activity as related. And to a leser extent:
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence. According to Howard Gardner, it entails the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking. The patterns of dance help to develop this intelligence.
alma
  • Spatial intelligence: the ability to recognize and use the patterns of wide space and more confined areas. Dancers need to think in patterns in space.
alma
  • Interpersonal intelligence: an ability to perceive and understand other individuals. Dance requires individuals to interact for the sake of the performance.
oh perry
  • Intrapersonal intelligence: an understanding of one's own emotions. Dancer’s need to understand and deal with their fear of performance.
Arts lessons integrated into the Core Curriculum
The company is a statewide leader in pioneering, designing and implementing arts based lessons that reinforce instruction in the core curriculum. Across the country , people understand that the arts a powerfull teaching tool through which students can learn information beyond pure art concepts. As succinctly stated I Champions of Change: The Impact of the arts on Learning published by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. “ The arts teach young people how to learn by giving them the first step , the desire to learn “. The arts are for everyone and can help to teach just about anything.
The groundbreaking research of Harvard Psychologist Howard Gartner further illustrates thee issue. K Gartner was the first to fully recognize that learners acquire information , build knowledge, and understand their world in multiple ways. Understanding that also means understanding that students need to be taught in varying ways. The arts are the ideal “Multi-purpose” tool. By using the arts it is ensured that you are addressing more than a single learning style in your classroom.
Residencies
A Residency is defined as a minimum of three contacts with the same group, ( usually scheduled on three different days), it is an opportunity for teachers and students to work in-depth with professional artists exploring the arts and making connections to other areas of the curriculum.
7
  • Residencies vary in length and can span days, weeks, months, or even a year
  • A residency can be designed to meet your needs, your budget, and schedule
  • Residency workshops are generally 45-60 minutes in length.
  • We recommend a lecture/demonstration performance to begin your residency and including a professional development workshop for teachers.
Community-wide presentations of student’s work
The highlight of a residency is the option to present a culminating event or presentation of the student’s work. Working toward a public presentation creates a lot of excitement and care in learning and preparing ( the process and the product). The ccoming together of the whole edcational community also provides an opportunity for parents participation, completion and self-valuation of the students.
